Here at Shuttlefish, our first ever project was for a client in the care industry and we’re proud to still be working with them to this day – along the way, we’ve been lucky enough to work with many other care clients as well as businesses in other fields. One big rebranding project we worked on last year for a family-run care home in Surrey is going full steam ahead again this year following a big change in the business.
Huntington House originally opened back in 1978 and it was a breath of fresh air to the care industry in the UK at the time. The person-centred business – now known as the Huntington & Langham Estate – is still pushing forward and carefully considering ground-breaking methodology to this day, perfectly pairing traditional values with modern medicine, care of the highest quality and a focus on the wellbeing of the people living there.

Do you have a New Year’s resolution? Here at Shuttlefish, some of us have a few in mind, which are mainly health-related – we love a challenge but are we putting too much stress on ourselves and setting ourselves up to fail?
Instead of saying you should do this and you should do that, how about you say you intend to do something? We think this makes it more achievable and an aspiration, rather than a punishment. It’s all about being in the right frame of mind and actually wanting to achieve the goal you’ve set yourself rather than just coming up with a standard resolution as a box-ticking exercise.
Most New Year’s resolutions centre on going on a health kick, be it cutting down on smoking and drinking (or even going cold turkey!) or limiting the rubbish in our diets and hitting the gym hard. Shuttlefishers included.
Apparently – and unsurprisingly – more than half of all resolutions fail, but how do you make sure you’re on the right side of that statistic? Well we have a few ideas to help keep you on the straight and narrow from now and into spring, summer and beyond.
Start by picking an achievable goal. If you say you’re going to do something unattainable, you’ll lose heart and give up before you’ve even started. Save yourself the stress by thinking about what you want to achieve and how you can get there, then take the bull by the horns and smash that challenge. With most resolutions, you’re completely in control and your success is in your hands.
Many people often set too many goals – if you have four or five resolutions in mind, think about whether you can really keep it up and genuinely think you can achieve all of them. If you think it could quite quickly become overwhelming, there’s a chance you may not achieve any of them whereas if you select the one that’s most important to you, you’re much more likely to be successful.
If you slip up, don’t punish yourself – just draw a line under it and go again. You’re still doing better than you were before you started trying to reach your goal, right? And why not split your long-term goal into manageable chunks so you can measure your progress as you go?
If you haven’t picked a resolution yet for 2019, it’s not too late to start now – we’re only a week in so you still have 51 weeks left to reach that goal, lose the weight that’s slowly crept on the past few years, finally quit smoking for good, start up your own business or run that half-marathon that you said you would do last year, it’s your year to make into whatever you want to. Even if it’s as simple as being happy. So, finish this sentence – 2019 is the year that I will ____________. Now go for it.
Earlier this year, we were approached by a care home group with a difference, whose care centres on faith. Christadelphian Care Homes didn’t feel their existing branding represented them well anymore, with a white-on-blue logo featuring a home, hands and the Bible; they wanted the sentiment to remain but asked for us to inject some warmth and colour into a new, modern logo.
Christadelphian Care Homes
Although most Christadelphian Care Home residents come from within the Christadelphian community, the homes welcome people from all walks of life. The rebrand wasn’t about reaching a wider audience, it was about being versatile and contemporary, and uniting all eight UK-wide homes under one visually-connected output for both print and digital, getting rid of the lack of unity and mixed messages seen under the old branding.
With most residents learning of their local Christadelphian care home through their ecclesia, the business never saw the need to advertise. However, with an outdated brand and the potential need to increase awareness going forward, they asked Shuttlefish to create a new brand, website and brochure, along with all the print and digital trimmings.
The task set by our client was to unite all Christadelphian Care Homes under one common language of care, using one set of visual guidelines and one set of text to describe the different aspects of care and what everyday life in a Christadelphian Care Home entails.
The new brand
Synonymous with Christadelphian beliefs to get as close as possible to the faith and practice of the early Christian church, the new logo is a simple blend of the outlines of a Home and the Bible – this is because they offer care of the highest quality, ingrained with their beliefs and the word of God.
The Christadelphian faith is non-Trinitarian, yet the old CCH logo featured three components – home, hands and the Bible. As Christadelphian Care Homes offer high-quality care underpinned by the belief and faith in the word of the Bible, we deemed these components the two essential factors in our new logo and therefore, the decision was made not to include the hands featured in the former logo.
The main Christadelphian Care Home logo features a bright and fun colour scheme, with vibrant and cool colours being used together to create the confluence of two gradients. The Bible outline features fuchsia, orange and yellow tones to signify warmth and happiness, and this interlinks with the cooler outline of the home, which uses different shades of blue that relate to depth and stability. The contrast of warm and cool colours makes our new logo eye-catching and unique, enhancing its clean and simple design. We live in a world where we take colour for granted, but colour is all around us and should be embraced – additionally, it alludes to the colourful kind of life you can live in Christadelphian Care Homes.
On the road with a camera for company
To make sure the new website, brochure and collateral complemented the homes in the best possible light, we went on a UK-wide photography trip to capture the best angles of all eight buildings – it was a big job but was essential to show prospective residents where they might soon be living and capture the essence of what life’s like in each Christadelphian Care Home.
For non-Christadelphians considering care, we thought it was important to get across that not sharing the Christadelphian faith won’t make living in one of their homes any less fulfilling, exciting or happy, with high-quality care and a focus on wellbeing of paramount importance, enhanced by a varied, engaging programme of events and activities. And for Christadelphians, what could be better than high-quality care, complete with spiritual guidance?

Whenever we create a website, brochure, ad or any other digital or print media for our clients, chances are that we need high-quality, up-to-date photographs. If clients don’t already have these, we pay them a visit and get snapping! And we quite often film great-quality footage too, to create short videos that really make our clients stand out. This is exactly what we did a couple of months back for our client, St. Michael’s Care in Kent.
Having invested a substantial sum into the renovation of the care home, our client wanted to show prospective residents and their family members how great the home looks inside and out and how truly caring the staff are. It was also a great time to showcase the quality and choice of food served and the varied activities and entertainment put on to make life as fun and fulfilling as possible for every resident. Our last objective was to show prospective team members how great it is to work at St. Michael’s, highlighting the closeness of existing staff and the many benefits of being an employee in the home.
At Shuttlefish, we wanted to help, so started by storyboarding the videos and making a list of who we needed to speak to and when. Time was short as we only had one day to get as much footage as possible – and it heavily depended on the weather.
With a photographer, videographer, director and assistant forming our crew for the day, we cracked on. Although we had a grey start, thankfully it brightened up and turned out to be beautifully sunny in Westgate-on-Sea. We decided to make the most of the dry weather and kicked things off on a golf course next to the home. We made the most of the opportunity to capture new video footage and stills and managed to get some great material to work with. With the drone flying high, we took some great shots with an aerial view, gliding up and over St. Michael’s, then down by the beach to document how beautiful and peaceful the area is.
It was great to have so much going on in the home to photograph and video; St. Michael’s holds regular parties for friends and family members to attend, completely free of charge, and residents absolutely love them. On the day of the shoot, there was a Caribbean-themed party going on, so we got some colourful photos capturing smiles all around. With the band playing, kids dancing and everybody smiling, we couldn’t have asked for a better day – there was even a pony with a multicoloured mane in attendance!
Although there was a lot of fun to be had down on the ground, a lot of the footage we used came from up in the air – striking landscapes provided the perfect backdrop for our videos, with staff and residents’ words bringing the home to life, telling the world why St. Michael’s is such a great place to live and to work. It’s not every day you spend the morning in a farmer’s field, exposed to a rather chilly breeze, but that’s exactly what the seven of us at Shuttlefish did on Tuesday. And it was all in the name of creativity.
As you’re reading this on our news page, you’ll no doubt be aware that we recently launched this shiny new website with a refreshed image, complete with case studies and examples of our latest work, so we thought we’d better take some high-quality photos to finish it off. And we really can’t wait to upload them.
Without wanting to give away all our secrets, we set about doing something a little different, so we sat down and had a think about fun, original ways to showcase what Shuttlefish is all about. Although we haven’t finished the final edit yet, we’re pretty confident the stills and video content will completely show you what our agency means to us – and we hope it’ll show our clients a different side to us, too.
Our long-term photography partner, @nickshortphoto, came to lend a hand – as the pics wouldn’t be quite right with a member of the team behind the camera rather than in front of the lens – and he captured some awesome portraits, group shots and video.
Our beautiful, branded tuk tuk, the Shuttlefish, was the star of the show (why wouldn’t it be?!) and we put it through its paces in an effort to bring out the very best in this rickety auto rickshaw. It’s difficult to do, trust us. But we had a heck of a lot of fun trying! We even got the drone out, waiting anxiously for the wind to die down for a few precious moments to capture some wobble-free footage of our three-wheeled mascot. On Friday 1st June, the Shuttlefish team descended on Dover’s Hill to celebrate the 406-year-old Cotswold Olimpicks – with Director Tom taking on the position of Chairman for this year’s edition of this historically-significant event, we thought the entire team should go along to support him…and what a great event it was. It’s a proper old-fashioned family fun day with all sorts to enjoy, including live music, morris dancing, a helter skelter, face painting, splat the rat, fire-eating, archery and jousting. And if you’re brave enough, there’s a whole host of other traditional events such as tug o’ war, shin-kicking, championship of the hill and champion of the hill that you can enter. If you’ve never seen shin-kicking before, it’s definitely something to put on your bucket list – that noise of shoe on unprotected bone is a sound that most certainly sticks in your mind. The aim of the game is to get your opponent on the ground, kicking their shins and holding on tightly to their shoulders in an effort to do so. In addition to the unique entertainment on offer, a long line of local independent caterers served up delicious food, including burgers, burritos, crepes, ice cream and wraps. And to finish the night off in style, the beacon was lit, and a fantastic firework display ensued, with the crowds looking out over the Vale of Evesham. A torch-lit parade back down Dover’s Hill has been part of the tradition since the very beginning, so this year was no different – when the fireworks had ended, everyone in attendance strolled back to Chipping Campden on mass with lit torches in hand, led by a brilliant marching band. We were all welcomed into the heaving town square for live music and frivolities that went on well into the night… Having missed a year before Tom took the helm, it was great to see the Games come back with a bang – and it’ll no doubt be just as successful next year too! If so, you’ll no doubt have already formed your own thoughts on how well things tend to go when travelling is involved…yes, it takes time and effort to keep it alive, but at Shuttlefish, we believe that just means you must make the most of the time you have together. That’s why we’re not talking romantically here, we’re talking about long-distance relationships from a business perspective! And we find working with clients located further away no different than working with those near to our studio just outside Stratford-upon-Avon. We do have several local clients in and around the Warwickshire area and it is quite nice to be able to swing by and say hello as and when we fancy it, but in the digital age, it’s so easy to send and receive briefs and creative work that a few more miles between us won’t ever hold us back. At Shuttlefish, we already work with clients in Merseyside, Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, West Midlands, Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, Greater London, Wiltshire, Sussex, Surrey, Devon, Dorset, Kent, even as far as Stirling in Scotland and Swansea in Wales! So, wherever you are, it’s no problem at all.
